| The idea for a museum was born from a gift
of the Nipo Strongheart
collection given to the Yakama Tribe in 1966. A permanent exhibit called
"The Challenge of Spilyay" was developed by the Yakamas to tell our story.
"Spilyay", pronounced Spilly-eye, was a legendary trickster who appeared
in the guise of a coyote and who, with daring humor, taught mankind how
to survive and live harmoniously with nature in all forms and moods. The
Yakamas invite you to spend some of your precious time with us in learning
the lessons taught to our People, the caretakers of Nature.
Many books on Yakama culture and tradition are now for sale in our new museum bookstore located within the main museum. Our Museum hours are:
or call (509)865-2800 for admission prices, guided tours and school group rates. |
